How the world came to be

The history of the board game world

BrettspielWelt developed from a personal initiative by me, Alexander Zbiek, to be able to play board games with friends on the Internet.

We often gathered for cozy game evenings and, as time would have it, we were torn apart and deprived of our game evenings due to studies abroad, relocations and similar things. But even as adults, we never lost the desire to play.

Back in 1998, in the early days of the JAVA programming language, I saw this as a unique opportunity to develop a board game where several people could play together over the Internet after my first attempts.

The first version of the board game world ran on a workstation server at the Leibniz computer center in Munich in 1998. And the first virtual game round was started. Unfortunately, we couldn't finish it because we had to abort the game due to a program error.

For two years, I developed further and further to fix these bugs and was confronted with new problems. But the desire to play the game kept me working on the program, often for 16 hours at a time.

After the first version was finished and the game could be played without errors, I put a small link in one of my pages and ... ... and sure enough, people I didn't know but who wanted to play the game suddenly appeared.

This created a need for several rooms in which to play. And this in turn created a world that contained these rooms. I constructed this world and my computer spent hours rendering images.

In order to include more games in this world, the basic concept had to be completely reworked.

In Tobias Lang and Sebastian Mellin, I have found team members who understand and live my idea! Together, I now see the opportunity to convey the fascination of board games to users on the Internet.
